Quantum Design Co-Founder Dr. Michael Simmonds Receives the 2016 IEEE Award

Dr. Michael Simmonds, co-founder of Quantum Design, received the IEEE Award for Continuing Contributions in the Field of Applied Superconductivity (Small Scale Applications) at this year’s Applied Superconductivity Conference (ASC) in Denver, Colorado. This award recognizes individuals for contributions in the field of applied superconductivity over a period of time (nominally more than twenty years) based on novel and innovative concepts proposed by the individual. Dr. Simmonds is recognized in part:

  • For his pioneering work in developing the revolutionary MPMS3 SQUID-VSM (SQUID based-Vibrating Sample Magnetometer).
  • For his design of a double-balanced SQUID which uses a symmetrical geometry to decouple the modulation and input coils.
  • For devising multiple methods of applying an AC bias to DC SQUIDs to greatly reduce low frequency noise, enabling their use in a wide variety of applications.

Quantum Design Hosts Tour for International Cryocooler Conference (ICC 19)

Quantum Design, a member of the Cryogenic Society of America (CSA), offered a private tour of its headquarters on June 23rd, to International Cryocooler Conference (ICC 19) attendees.  Dr. Martin Kugler, Chief Operating Officer of Quantum Design, led the tour of the manufacturing facilities for more than 30 participants from the conference.  During the tour attendees had the opportunity to learn of the latest developments in Quantum Design’s popular DynaCool, MPMS3 and VersaLab cryogen free platform offerings which now include “energy smart” Gifford-McMahon cryo-refrigerators and variable speed compressors.

Quantum Design International Moves into New Headquarters

In June of this year, Quantum Design International moved its global headquarters to be closer to its manufacturing facilities thereby creating a new Quantum Design International campus. The new building (adding roughly 50,000 square feet of office, research and production space for a campus total of more than 100,000 square feet) allows QDI’s 200+ employees to be in the same location for the first time in more than 6 years. The move allows greater efficiency in development and manufacturing processes, as well as improving communication and team-building between departments. Quantum Design Hosts Tours for MMM-Intermag Conference

Quantum Design hosted tours for attendees of the MMM-Intermag Conference that was held in San Diego, California on January 11-15. The tours occurred on Thursday 1/14 and Friday 1/15. Visitors were shown the production and final test floors of Quantum Design’s manufacturing facility in San Diego and were then treated to an informal reception in the Quantum Design Applications Lab. Current research projects were presented and attendees had a chance to interact with Quantum Design engineers. Quantum Design would like to thank everyone who took this opportunity to visit us.

Quantum Design hosted a tour for attendees of the Big ideas in Quantum Materials Workshop that was held in La Jolla, California on December 14-17. The tour occurred on Wednesday, December 16th, and visitors were shown through the production and final test floors of Quantum Design’s manufacturing facility in San Diego. They were then treated to an informal reception where they were shown current research projects being developed and had a chance to interact with Quantum Design engineers. Quantum Design Announces New Website to Promote Science Education

Quantum Design believes in the importance of innovations for educating tomorrow’s scientists and engineers, especially in the fields of condensed matter physics, chemistry and materials science. Our primary goal is to teach students how to preserve and foster their magical curiosity and to learn how to express it creatively. This new website is part of an initiative between QD and leading universities to develop a teaching curriculum that exploits simple and “uncluttered” leading edge technology to inspire students to learn in new and more meaningful ways. Its purpose is to encourage the development and sharing of measurement curricula using our wide range of measurement options along with our PPMS® VersaLab™ cryogenic platform. The teaching materials and sample experiments on this site are meant to provide instructors in physics and materials sciences readymade solutions to use in their undergraduate and beginning graduate classrooms and laboratories.
